ABOUT THE COOPERATIVE:
Meru District is located on the eastern slope of the highest mountain in the country - Mt.Kenya (5199 m).
Due to the altitude (farms are located at an altitude of 1280 - 1970 m.a.s.l.), fertile
red volcanic soil and tropical climate, coffee from Meru is considered one of the
the best in Kenya, and the entire region is called "The Champagne Region of Coffee". Him a peculiarity is that the intermediate harvest in April - July is as good as the main one September - December.

Gitugu Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society is one of the members of Meru Coffee Cooperative Union located in Meru District. Gitugu is located on the eastern slopes mountains of Kenya and consists of small farms that work in various areas of rural farms, including the cultivation of coffee, tea, and the production of dairy products. At the same time, coffee is one of their main crops. Local farmers grow different ones coffee varieties including SL 28, SL 34, Ruiru 11 and Batian.

Meru Central Coffee Cooperative Union Limited (MCCCU)
unites 48 cooperatives (70% of existing in the region) and 98 thousand
small farmers. They recently got their license
roasters and plan to open several coffee shops in Meru.
In 2018, MCCCU was engaged in reaching the local soil,
during which more than 2000 samples were tested. The results
of these studies helped to increase the yield of almost
three times! For this, MCCCU was recognized with the Impact Maker Award
from AgroCares. In addition, the company actively involves young people in
participation in coffee cooperatives, teaching them the basics
management by providing free seedlings
