This bean comes from the plantations of Jigesa village in the Guji zone of the southern Oromia region, considered the birthplace of coffee. It has ideal conditions for growing Arabica: high altitude (over 1,500 m); rich, well-drained (mostly volcanic) soils that require little additional fertilizer;
a high-altitude tropical climate with 1,500–2,500 mm of rainfall over a nine-month period and optimal temperatures of 15–24°C.
Over the past 60 years, rapid commercial and cultural development has transformed Guji into a unique coffee zone, which has been a separate administrative unit since 2002. Coffee from here presents a distinctive terroir that distinguishes it from other beans in the Oromia region.
Jigesa Station is located in the village of the same name in Shakiso Department. Nardos Coffee Export is a third-generation family coffee business that dates back to the 1960s. Ato Aklilu Kassa founded Nardos Coffee Export in 1998 in Addis Ababa, and since then the company has grown to become one of Ethiopia’s leading coffee exporters. They export around 2,000 tonnes of washed and naturally processed coffee beans each year. In 2012, Nardos joined a social initiative to establish a local library and provide women with hygiene products.
