Mauricio Escalon was born into a family of coffee producers, which began its coffee history in the third quarter of the 1800s. In the 1870s, his great-grandfather, Pedro Jose Escalon, founded a plantation in Santa Ana. He later founded El Molino, the first industrial coffee processing enterprise in El Salvador. By the end of the 20th century, the family business was going through hard times due to the coffee price crisis. However, with the involvement of Mauricio, he got a second wing. In 2003, Cafescal was created with the strategy of penetrating the specialty coffee philosophy. The name of the company stands for Cafe Escalon Calderon, where Calderon is the last name of Mauricio's mother. Now the family business has 10 farms and 2 mills. Mauricio is the managing director of specialty coffee exporter Cafescal. He is responsible for the administration and management of agricultural processes. He has a degree in architecture and experience in community building, but his passion for coffee brought him back to the family business.
In the late 1800s, Holland, along with San Antonio and San Gabriel, were part of a single farm called San Antonio. This was the farm where Escalon Heritage in Coffee began. It is said to have been the first export of coffee to the United States in the late 1880s. Currently, Holanda occupies 8 hectares, where Bourbon, Pacas and Columbia coffee varieties are cultivated, grown in the shade of Ingas trees. San Jose Estate is located in the Ilamatepec mountain range, in the canton of El Jocoton-Arriba, near Lake Caotepeque. Its clay soils give a special quality of coffee. This farm is home to the Cafescal processing plant - Beneficio San Jose. Bourbon, Pacas, Parainema, Marseilles and Yellow Ikatu varieties are grown on an area of 13 hectares in the shade of orange trees. Las Marias Farm has been in the Escalon family since the early 1900s. Later it was divided between two descendants. One of them sold his share to another company in the 1990s. And just a few years ago, Mauricio bought it back and returned it to the family property. Now, on an area of 35.7 hectares, Bourbon, Pacas, Colombia, Pacamara coffee varieties are grown here in the shade of Inga and Gravileos trees. In 2021 Pacamara from Las Marias was among the winning lots of the Cup of Excellence. As a social responsibility, Cafescal promotes the "happy people" program, which is based on the happiness of what you do. They encourage the team to find happiness in their daily work
