The Nyabumera Wash Station is located in the Mahembe sector of Nyamasheke District. It is strategically located at the entrance to the valley. Acquired by its new owner, Providence, in 2023, the station had been neglected for the previous two years. Providence has taken proactive steps to revitalize the space, clean up certain areas, and plans to increase the number of drying beds and build more storage facilities on site.
The station operates with a team of 5 permanent staff, including 2 women, and employs between 80 and 100 seasonal workers during peak harvest, with 70% of the workforce being women.
In 2023, Nyabumera received supplies from 1,200 farmers in the area; farmers were registered at the time of delivery and enrolled in training programs (TPs) both during harvest and off-season. Training sessions are held at the station and include farm visits.
This year marks the first collaboration with the ATP program, implementing a combination of organic and chemical fertilizers, a common practice in the region. The station draws water from a local spring, and after separating the husk and mucilage, the water is filtered through stones in a water pit and neutralized with EM and lime before discharge.
As a testament to future growth, Nyabumera had 100,000 seedlings ready for distribution in 2023 to support local farmers, demonstrating a commitment to a sustainable and thriving coffee economy in the region.
